The subteams of SOLID are developing the metal fuels technology through a contribution towards the creation of scientific, economical and societal analyses while in addition striving towards stimulating the exchange of scientific knowledge and realizing business concepts.
WHO WE ARE
SOLID is a multidisciplinary team of students from Eindhoven University of Technology. Founded in 2016, the team has grown into a large and ambitious organization. We aim to accelerate the energy transition by developing metal fuel technology.
Early 2020, we will demonstrate the first industrial application of metal fuels. To achieve this, we are developing an initial demonstration unit together with a wide range of partners in both academia and industry. This scalable unit will demonstrate the industrial potential of an iron powder based energy storage system.
SOLID SO FAR
OUR FIRST IRON FLAME
After some time, we became familiar with the behavior of burning mixtures of metals with oxygen and the equipment needed to do so. We decided to keep pursuing our pragmatic approach and to try to establish a stable iron flame as fast as possible. Not long after, our first iron flame was born.
REALISATION PROOF OF CONCEPT
We succeeded in realizing our proof of concept. We managed to bake an egg, make some hot coffee and burn a light using the energy from the combusted iron powder. The rust powder was collected in a container, ready to be recycled back to iron.
METAL POWER SUBSIDY PROJECT
The Province of Noord-Brabant made one million euros available to build a demonstration model running on iron powder. we are realizing this system together with technical partners from the industry and the TU/e.
In early 2020 the demonstration system will be finished, ready to show that our system cannot only function inside the lab environment, but also in a real-life application. The system will use iron powder to produce steam, which will contribute to the brewing processes of Swinkels Family Brewers.
THE FOUNDATION OF SOLID
Three students of Eindhoven University of Technology discovered the concept of metal fuels. Based on fundamental research conducted at McGill University in Canada and Groupe PSA in France, they founded SOLID.
DESIGN PROOF OF CONCEPT
We wanted to show the world that iron powder can serve as a magnificent sustainable energy carrier. Therefore, we designed a proof of concept: a small system in the lab that can burn iron powder, extract the energy and capture the rust powder. Eleven students started the journey on providing evidence for the feasibility of such a system.
After the summer, we made a press release about our proof of concept, which generated a significant amount of media attention. Articles were posted in the National Geographic magazine, on the website of De Ingenieur, NU.nl and on several other news platforms.
The moment is finally there! On February the 27th, we organized an event at the TU/e attended by over 150 visitors at which our partners got to present their company and their contribution to the Metal Power project. Finally, we revealed our industrial partner at which our demonstration of the energy storage system based on iron powder will take place: Swinkels Family Brewers!
