Reduction Project for SIR-1

Powering the Future with Iron-Based Hydrogen Storage

In our journey towards a more sustainable, circular energy system, SOLID proudly introduces an exciting advancement: the Reduction Project in SIR1 (Steam Iron Reactor 1). This project is a pivotal step in enhancing our Iron-Based Hydrogen Storage cycle, making it more self-sufficient, efficient, and ready for a clean energy future.

Why this matters?

Hydrogen is key to the energy transition, yet storing and transporting it efficiently has been a challenge. SOLID’s Steam Iron Reactor (SIR1) allows hydrogen to be stored within iron, but previously, securing a steady supply of pre-reduced iron pellets was a hurdle. Ironically, most suppliers offered only oxidised pellets, limiting our ability to store hydrogen continuously. To solve this, we’ve integrated the reduction process directly into the SIR1 system, enabling it to convert iron oxide back to iron on-site. This allows for a full hydrogen storage cycle without dependence on external suppliers.

How it works

The reduction process in SIR1 mirrors the oxidation process used in extracting hydrogen but with a simple twist—adding a controlled flow of pure hydrogen. This hydrogen interacts with iron oxide, producing iron fuel and setting the stage for a sustainable, repeating storage cycle. With only minor changes to the SIR1 setup, like adding a hydrogen inlet and integrating flow controllers, we’ve created a streamlined, automated system capable of both storing and generating hydrogen on-demand.

Safety first

Introducing pure hydrogen into the system adds complexity, so safety is paramount. We’ve partnered with experts and former team members to update protocols and ensure safe operation. Each hydrogen flow and reaction is carefully managed, providing a secure environment for our work toward a sustainable energy future.

The road ahead...

The Reduction Project in SIR1 is a game-changer for SOLID and for hydrogen storage. By making SIR1 fully self-sufficient, we’re moving closer to a world where renewable energy is abundant, reliable, and safe.
